Virtual balance coaching

See your progress, not just your symptoms.

Virtual Balance Coaching with Dr. Ryan combines education, guided rehabilitation, and objective measurement through The Balance Audit. The app is the platform that makes remote coaching specific, measurable, and connected.

Why virtual coaching

Specialized balance guidance without traveling to the clinic.

Dizziness, balance difficulty, and post-concussion symptoms can be hard to follow from symptom reports alone. Virtual coaching brings structured education, guided assessment, and rehabilitation support to your home.

  • Work with Dr. Ryan through live virtual sessions from wherever you are
  • Guided phone-based assessments between visits, not guesswork about how today feels
  • Exercise programs assigned, tracked, and adjusted based on objective findings
  • A connected workflow: assess, review, rehabilitate, and retest over time

Why This Exists

Not everyone who needs specialized brain and balance rehabilitation can travel to my clinic in Utah.

Every week I hear from people around the world living with dizziness, vertigo, imbalance, brain fog, motion sensitivity, chronic symptoms, and other neurological complaints. Many have exhausted the options available locally and are still searching for better answers.

One of the most valuable parts of my in-person clinic is objective measurement. Those measurements help me understand how the nervous system is functioning and guide individualized rehabilitation.

Eventually I asked myself: "What if I could bring that same objective approach to people anywhere in the world using something almost everyone already has in their pocket: a smartphone?"

That question became The Balance Audit. It is the platform that powers my Virtual Balance Coaching program. It allows me to remotely assess, measure progress over time, prescribe exercises, and adapt rehabilitation using objective information rather than symptoms alone.

The sections below walk through how Virtual Balance Coaching works — and how The Balance Audit supports the process along the way.

Why objective measurement matters

Symptoms shift. Measurements can show a steadier picture.

How you feel this morning may not match yesterday. Memory alone is not always reliable for following change over weeks.

  • Repeated standardized assessments offer another way to observe what is happening
  • Objective measurements complement your symptom experience; they do not replace it
  • Clearer information between visits: what was measured, how it compares, and whether rehab may need to adjust

The bigger picture

Balance is connected to more than balance.

The vestibular system in your inner ear helps your brain understand where you are in space. Vestibular pathways do not work in isolation. They interact with many other brain systems.

Vestibular pathways interact with systems involved in:

  • Balance
  • Vision
  • Spatial awareness
  • Posture
  • Movement
  • Attention
  • Concentration
  • Motion tolerance
  • Autonomic regulation
  • Emotional regulation

When vestibular function is disrupted, some people experience symptoms such as:

  • Dizziness
  • Vertigo
  • Motion sensitivity
  • Brain fog
  • Chronic muscle tightness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Imbalance
  • Anxiety associated with movement or busy environments

Vestibular dysfunction does not explain every one of these symptoms, and improving vestibular function will not eliminate them for everyone. For some people, vestibular issues can contribute to these experiences. Targeted vestibular rehabilitation may be one important part of a broader plan, depending on the individual.

The platform behind it

Introducing The Balance Audit

The Balance Audit is not a separate product competing with coaching. It is the platform that powers Virtual Balance Coaching: guiding phone-based assessments, storing objective results, assigning exercises, and connecting your progress with Dr. Ryan between sessions.

  • Guided balance, coordination, and check-in assessments at home
  • Objective measurement stored and compared across sessions
  • Exercise assignments with dosage, instructions, and completion tracking
  • Secure sync between you and Dr. Ryan for review between virtual sessions

The technology enables the coaching. The coaching is the experience.

Guided assessment at home

Clear instructions and safety built in.

The platform uses your phone's motion sensors while you follow guided protocols. Setup covers foot placement, phone position, and safety confirmation before testing begins.

  • Phone secured and held as instructed
  • Open, safe testing area with support or spotter nearby if needed
  • Guided audio and on-screen directions throughout
  • Stop if you feel unsafe, dizzy, or at risk of falling

Your results

Measurements you can review, not just remember.

After each guided assessment, the platform produces objective results you can compare across sessions and discuss with Dr. Ryan.

Your results

Assessment detail

How your body moved during the test

  • Estimated trunk travel, directional bias, fatigue, and vertical motion
  • Sway path graph tracing movement across the testing surface
  • Metric definitions available in-app

Values reflect one test session. They support tracking and discussion. They do not diagnose a condition or prove recovery on their own.

Your results

What you get after each assessment

  • Total movement, movement bias, and vertical motion with plain-language descriptions
  • Personal best tracking for the same standardized position
  • Results saved and ready for review during virtual coaching

Many people begin seeing measurable changes after just one session.

The goal isn't to promise immediate improvement. The goal is to objectively measure change so you can see whether rehabilitation is moving in the right direction.

One assessment is a snapshot. Repeated assessments can show a pattern.

Retesting under the same conditions lets the platform compare sessions over weeks. That may provide another perspective on whether measures are shifting.

  • Compare results across sessions
  • Observe trends symptom memory may miss
  • Discuss changes during virtual coaching
  • Inform exercise progression and follow-up testing

Balance measurement

What the platform can estimate and track.

Motion sensors estimate postural stability during guided tests. Results are guideposts for conversation, not proof of recovery or a diagnosis.

Trunk travel and sway

Body movement during standardized positions.

Directional bias

Whether sway tends toward one direction.

Vertical motion

Up-and-down movement during each test.

Fatigue during the test

How measures may shift within a single session.

Differences across positions

Comparisons between eyes open, eyes closed, and other protocol conditions.

Progress across sessions

How estimates compare when you retest over weeks.

Why retesting matters

Timing and coordination

Rhythm and timing through standardized tapping.

The Tap Assessment measures how closely your timing matches expected patterns. Feedback shows whether taps were on time, early, or late.

  • Adds objective timing information alongside balance testing
  • Helps track whether coordination is changing across repeated sessions
  • Not used to diagnose a specific condition or pinpoint a brain region
Tapping assessment screen with alternating left and right tap targets and timing feedback
My Exercises screen showing completed daily exercises and a one-day streak celebration

Exercise guidance

Rehabilitation assigned, tracked, and adjusted over time.

Dr. Ryan assigns home exercises through the platform. You mark sessions complete; programs may adjust when retesting suggests a change is needed.

  • Sets, duration, and frequency visible for each activity
  • Video demonstrations where available
  • Completion tracking and consistency over time
  • Streaks are encouragement, not pressure to push through when you are not ready

Ongoing review

You at home, connected through objective data.

Virtual coaching does not end when a session ends. The Balance Audit carries measurements, exercises, and check-in responses between you and Dr. Ryan.

What this is, and what it isn't

Virtual balance coaching is educational and rehabilitation-focused. It is not intended to establish an ongoing physician-patient relationship or provide medical diagnosis through the app alone.

If medical evaluation or treatment is needed, you should continue working with your local healthcare providers. Urgent or concerning symptoms deserve appropriate in-person evaluation.

What the platform does not do

Clear boundaries build trust.

The Balance Audit supports virtual coaching. It is a tool for measurement, tracking, and rehabilitation support. Not a replacement for medical care.

  • Does not replace emergency evaluation or urgent medical care
  • Does not diagnose balance or neurological conditions by itself
  • Does not guarantee improvement or specific outcomes
  • Is not appropriate when someone cannot test safely at home
  • Should be used according to app instructions and professional guidance when applicable
