Why does driving make me dizzy?

Driving requires your brain to combine information from your eyes, inner ears, neck, muscles, and joints to determine how your body is moving through space. If those systems are not working together efficiently, driving can trigger dizziness, motion sensitivity, nausea, anxiety, or a feeling of being overwhelmed. The important question is not simply why driving makes you dizzy. It's understanding which part of the system is struggling so it can be specifically addressed.

Why does driving affect people so differently?
One of the most interesting things about driving-related dizziness is that no two people experience it exactly the same way.
Some people feel better when they are the one driving because every movement is predictable and under their control.
Others feel much worse behind the wheel and prefer to be a passenger.
Some people cannot look out the side window because the passing scenery makes their symptoms worse.
Others actually feel better when they look out the window and keep their eyes focused on a stable point in the distance.
These differences are important because they provide clues about which parts of the balance system may not be working as efficiently as they should.
What is happening?
Driving constantly challenges your nervous system.
Your eyes are processing moving scenery, changing speeds, traffic, signs, and other vehicles.
At the same time, your vestibular system detects acceleration, braking, turns, and changes in direction.
Your neck, muscles, and joints provide another stream of information about where your body is positioned.
Normally, all of these systems agree.
When they don't, your brain has to work much harder to figure out what is happening around you, and that extra effort can produce dizziness, motion sensitivity, fatigue, nausea, or a feeling that something just isn't right.
What I look at
- When someone tells me that driving makes them dizzy, I don't assume everyone needs the same exercises.
- I want to understand why driving is creating symptoms for that person.
- I use objective testing to evaluate how the visual, vestibular, and balance systems are functioning together. The goal is to identify the specific finding contributing to the problem, apply targeted rehabilitation, and then measure whether those findings improve.
- Rather than simply avoiding driving or trying to push through symptoms, I want to improve the system that is creating the problem in the first place.
