Can neck problems cause dizziness?

Yes, neck problems can contribute to dizziness in some people, but not everyone who has neck pain is dizzy, and not everyone who is dizzy has a neck problem. Your neck contains thousands of receptors that constantly send information to your brain about the position and movement of your head. That information works together with your eyes and inner ears to help your brain understand where you are in space. If those signals are not being processed efficiently, they may contribute to dizziness, imbalance, visual symptoms, or a feeling that something just isn't right. The important question is not simply whether your neck is involved. It's whether your neck is contributing to your symptoms.

How can the neck affect dizziness?

Your brain combines information from three major systems to help maintain balance:

Your eyes

Your inner ears (vestibular system)

Your neck and the rest of your body

Normally, those systems agree with one another.

If the information coming from your neck doesn't match what your eyes and vestibular system are telling your brain, it can become more difficult for your brain to accurately determine where your head is in space. That mismatch may contribute to dizziness, motion sensitivity, visual discomfort, headaches, or balance problems.

A common misunderstanding

One misconception I hear frequently is:

"My vestibular testing was normal, so it must be coming from my neck."

Unfortunately, it isn't that simple.

Vestibular testing is not all the same. Different tests measure different parts of the vestibular system, and some evaluations are much more comprehensive than others.

A normal result on one test—or even several tests—doesn't automatically rule out a vestibular contribution. It simply tells us that those particular aspects of the system appeared normal.

That's why it's so important to understand what was actually tested before concluding where the symptoms are coming from.

The neck can absolutely contribute to dizziness in some people, but it shouldn't become the default explanation simply because an earlier vestibular evaluation was incomplete.

The goal is to identify which systems are contributing to your symptoms through thorough testing, rather than assuming the answer based on what wasn't found.

What I look at

  • When I suspect the neck is contributing to someone's symptoms, I don't automatically treat the neck the same way for everyone.
  • One technique I sometimes use is adding gentle resistance with the hand while performing certain vestibular rehabilitation exercises. The goal is to help the neck and vestibular system communicate more efficiently while the brain processes movement.
  • For some people, this can significantly improve how the system functions.
  • For others, it can actually make their objective findings worse.
  • That is exactly why I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach.
  • I measure how your system responds before and after an intervention. If adding the neck improves the findings, we may continue using it. If it makes the system less efficient, we change the approach.
  • The goal isn't to force every patient through the same exercises. It's to identify what helps your nervous system function better.
