Why do fluorescent lights make me dizzy?

For some people, fluorescent lights, bright LED lighting, or visually busy environments can trigger dizziness, headaches, nausea, eye strain, or a feeling of being "off." The light itself is not necessarily the problem. More often, it is how your brain processes that visual information. If your visual, vestibular, and neurological systems are not working together efficiently, environments with bright or artificial lighting may become surprisingly uncomfortable. The important question isn't whether fluorescent lights trigger your symptoms. It's why your nervous system is responding that way.

Why do lights affect some people but not others?

Think about two people walking into the exact same grocery store.

One barely notices the lighting.

The other immediately feels dizzy, overwhelmed, or like they need to leave.

The lights didn't change.

The difference is how each person's nervous system is processing the environment.

For some people, bright lighting increases the amount of visual information the brain has to process. If the visual system is already working harder than it should, those environments can become mentally and physically exhausting.

That may show up as dizziness, headaches, motion sensitivity, eye strain, fatigue, or difficulty concentrating.

Can this improve?

In many cases, yes.

My goal isn't simply to help someone avoid bright environments forever.

I want to identify the specific dysfunction contributing to the symptoms, apply targeted rehabilitation, and objectively measure whether the system is functioning differently afterward.

When the nervous system becomes more efficient, many people find that environments that once felt overwhelming become much easier to tolerate.

What I look at

  • When someone tells me that fluorescent lights trigger their symptoms, I don't assume the lights are the problem.
  • I want to understand why those lights are creating symptoms for that individual.
  • I evaluate how the visual system, eye movements, vestibular system, and balance system work together. Sometimes the issue is primarily visual. Sometimes it is vestibular. Sometimes other systems are contributing as well.
  • The same symptom does not always have the same cause.
  • That is why I rely on objective testing to identify which systems may be contributing instead of assuming everyone needs the same treatment.
